Default shaving front tires

Did anybody happen to see the deal on the qualifing show about Greg Andersons front tires? Anybody have an idea about what can be gained by doing this? My thought is that you would want the least amont of contact between the tire and track as possible and shaving the tires untill they were bald would would give you more contact with the track while a treaded tire would give you less but there must be a reason for doing it or they would not have done it for the last 3 seasons. Any ideas?

Question Re: shaving front tires

I'm thinking rolling friction too. I mean they wouldn't do that just to mess with the other teams heads right?

At the speed Pro Stocks go, what is the air doing at the front tires? Could it move more smoothly around a tire without grooves? I would think this is a possible reason. I also think a bald tire allows more contact and more friction to slow you down, but one could pump more air in that bald tire getting it up off that surface a bit so there is no loss from that. I believe aerodynamics is why they are doing this. Just my opinion.
