The Names of the First Bracket Classes in the Mid 1970's
With lower 'cars counts' in the mid-1970's.
Drag Strips were trying to salvage what they could, to get more Drag Racing participation. Soon there was a mixture of Old Dragsters, Open-Body Altereds, long forgotten Gassers, and even 1965 AWB cars showing up. And of course, Daily Drivers, including low performance family cars blazing down the 'Quarter' in the 18.00s. Class names that I recall. * 0.00 to 8.99............Unlimited...(Rails and Funny Cars) * 9.00 to 10.99..........Super Pro..(Gassers, Pro Stock, Modified Production) * 11.00 to 12.99........Heavy * 13.00 to 14.99........Street Eliminator * 15.00 and up..........Street Stock |

Around here, before the more universally accepted classes of Pro: 11.99 and quicker, Heavy: 12.00-13.99 and Street: 14.00 and slower, were used, I can remember at Puyallup Raceway, if you wanted to race for money there were: Bracket 1, Bracket 2 and Bracket 3,,, 1 being fastest and 3 being slowest. If you just wanted to run for trophies there were: Bracket A, Bracket B and Bracket C,, there again,, A was fastest and C was slowest. This numerical/alphabetical system didn't last but a season or two.

There was also a "Pro" category below "Super Pro" at some tracks.
Looked good on the windows to the unknowing general public. |

In the mid 70s thru the tracks closure at the end of 1978, Mission Raceways bracket classes were Bracket 1 (11.99 and quicker), Bracket 2 was 12.00 to 13.99, and Bracket 3 was 14.00 and slower. All the classes used the FIVE amber (remember that?), 5 tenths sportsman tree.

Hampton Raceway was called Star 1 for 0-12.99 and Star 2 for 13.00 and up until 73 or 4 when they changed it to BK 1 and BK 2 with BK 1 changing to 0-11.99. National Speedway was called Pro for 0-11.75 and changed to 11.99 in 74. BK 1 and 2 were the slower classes.
