Stocker Tech Rules Gas Tank & Battery?

If you use a stock mounted battery location are you allowed to modify the tray and hold down to prevent the battery from tipping or moving around? Lastly if you use a stock tank can you modify it too for a sump and smaller actual tank capacity? If not can you use it to cover the bottom half of the fuel cell so it still looks stock from behind and underneath? Thanks in advance for the input.

Yes to battery mounting. In fact you need 3/8 metal holddowns and to replacethe open J hooks that are usually the factory mounting. I have never heard of the gas tank sumps being illegal.....but why not have the safety of a fuel cell instead of all that work on stock tank?

NHRA 2015 Rule book under Stock

GAS TANK
Must be correct year, make, and model for car used, with stock
fuel inlet and outlet locations. Must be in stock location; fuel line
and pickup may be resized. Fuel cell permitted; maximum capacity
16 gallons. If fuel cell is used, OEM gas tank must be removed,
and a firewall of minimum .032-inch aluminum or .024-inch steel
must be installed to totally seal driver compartment from fuel cell.
Trunk floor may be modified to accommodate fuel-cell sump.
Where OEM gas tank is in the trunk floor, area occupied by OEM
tank may be replaced with material equal to or heavier than OEM
floor. If OEM gas tank is used, it must remain unaltered.

Based on the rule, he could probably use the material from the bottom of the OEM fuel tank to fill the hole vacated by replacing it with the fuel cell. Use the bottom of the tank as the "equal or greater thickness" fill material. This is Call the Tech stuff, though.

IF OEM tank is used it MUST remain UNALTERED,,, seems simple to me.

the way I read the rule is if using a stock tank you are only allowed 2 MODIFICATIONS to the tank you can RESIZE the fuel line & the pickup--- it says nothing about sump areas in a stock tank being allowed that I would consider a modification--- NO OTHER MODS ALLOWED--- now if you use a fuel cell many times a sump area will be molded in as part of the design so you will be OK and in addition you must fabricate a metal barrier between the cell and the passenger area---my take on it-- FED387

I hear you,, if you're going to resize both the fuel line and pickup,, you'd want the correct fittings to finish the resizing,, therefore modifying part of the tank,which is not allowed, so they've created a "grey area" once again, in rules interpetations. I'm not going to tell anyone how to construct their own car,, but if its me,, I'm going with a fuel cell, putting this behind me and moving on to the next area of construction. My 2 cents.

No comment on part 3 so here's mine:
Gas tank shields were used as far back as the 60's..sometimes as a good way to add weight
(C/FX cars, etc.)
I don't see any good reason why you couldn't fab one out of a gutted oem tank, and securely mount it to shield the bottom of the fuel cell and it's fuel lines.
Of course if you ask ,rather than just doing it, I'm sure the answer would be no.

Saw this installation at a cruise night. Pretty scary.

On a car where the factory gas tank is the trunk floor, do they require you to install a metal barrier?
