This track was running in the 60's maybe early 70's not sure it was somewhere around Gunter field? Any body here ever race there and if so do you remember the name of it and maybe some pics?
Thanks! |

Re: The first Montgomery,Ala dragstrip info?
Raced there many times. First time I ever went down a drag strip was there. It was on Federal Drive across from Gunter AFB. Some of the asphalt is still being use now for a private road to businesses. Capitol City Dragway. There should be a lot of pictures somewhere. I probably have some. Lot of guys from Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi and Tennessee raced there every Saturday night back then. People that come to mind are Myself, Bob Dennis's Banana II , Sonny Ray, David Rampy's High Times,Hugh Meeks, Ray Lee's Bootlegger, Jerry Coley Golden Goose, Max Hall's Revenuer, Bill Jacobs, Pete William's Alabama Thunder, John Livingston with the Tennessee Thunder, OctaneStang, Billy Piltcher, Harold Bentley's Krunchy Chicken. Wish I could remember all of them. Lot of great racer came from there. Get in touch with Max Hall he can tell you all of them.

Re: The first Montgomery,Ala dragstrip info?
Josh, Not sure when the track was built but the first time I ran there was in '66 or early '67. As far as I remember it always ran at a 1000' except in about '74 when they had an 1/8th mile IHRA Points race. Buck Todd and Jack Daniels ran it for quite awhile and had it when IHRA was there. They always paid good money for S/SS and I made the trip over there on Friday night many times.
In '68 Montgomery had a NHRA points race at an Industrial Park, seemed like it was inside the perimeter but can't remember where. I think it was held there because Capitol City couldn't run a full quarter due to shut down area. Later there was a drag strip west of town on the same property as the round track and it ran for a few years, probably late seventies and early eighties. Was this track under a bunch of trees and did it face going away from the main road?
