Re: Stocker Cam Grinders
Another vote for Red Line Cams. We will give them a call when we get closer. We did some flow testing on the 920 head and did a sonic test on the three blocks. One of the blocks had thinner decks (~.380") than the other two. I am looking for a set of 302 casting heads to flow and some of the stock iron intakes. My builder didn't like the mismatch in the ports between the 920 head and the LD4B. Quite a difference in port width. I guess Edelbrock assumed that people would do a port/gasket match on the heads.

Actually, Tim Cole has been running the competition department at Comp for years, he and Chris Padgitt have been the Stock and Super Stock experts there for years, and have not gone anywhere. Billy Godbold has been their cam designer for quite a while. John Partridge bought Bullet Cams from Darrel Hawkins, John had been working for Atech Motorsports, the commercial side of Summit, after having left Lunati years earlier. John is a nice guy, and Don Walthall is a very good cam designer. But no, they do not employ "all" of the Stock and Super Stock cam experts from "all" of the other companies. |

Thanks for the update..! What I stated was what I heard from a while back. Did not know otherwise. Glad to know the facts. Dan |
Re: Stocker Cam Grinders
Alan, thanks for the info. My engine builder talked to someone at from Comp at the Division 2 Hall of Fame meeting a week or two back. He went to see Scotty McLendon get an award. At any rate he got some contacts at Comp to talk to. I'll pass on those contacts as well, probably the same guys. Apparently he talked to several racers there and they all thought I was bonkers for building a stocker. Probably true, but I don't have much interest in the other classes. I had John Partridge grind me a Pure Stock cam for a 340 when we had an IHRA track near Dallas. That went away and so did that plan.

Re: Stocker Cam Grinders
I have always bought my cams from Chris Padgitt at Comp Cams. I just tell him what I am building and he has a cam made for it. I have never been able to improve on what he sends me the first time.

Re: Stocker Cam Grinders
I saw recently that Charlie Westcott Jr. makes Stock Eliminator cams.

Spiro Jannings, redline race cams. Always made more power, and never any "livability" issues with his designs and he understands S&SS.

Is a hydraulic cam legal in a solid lifter engine in Stock? I had the thought that we will be giving up a small amount of lift due to the lash in a solid lifter cam. We don't get much lift in the 273 combos, so maybe every bit counts? We can run the hydraulic lifters with maybe .002" preload/travel? Any thoughts on this? |
