Sunoco people say they have given NHRA new numbers to use,but they have not updated the charts yet.So who knows. Some racers are using blue, which is not that more expensive per drum.

There is nothing wrong with Sunoco race fuel.Seems every race the last year or so,they tell you it is bad or borderline bad.Hopefully Sunoco can fix this issue with NHRA soon.I believe the charts need to be "updated".

What could possibly be wrong with the fuel? Too much octane? Do you have to run ''track'' fuel? Or, can you come in with your own ''110 octane'', and pass?

Had problems out west here at the recent Div 6 divisional. 110 Purple checked "on the bottom" but came up 1 step up with no changes or fresh fuel added later in the day as the temps warmed. Always have had trouble at west coast divisional/nationals with Sunoco 110 whether from pump or barrel. "ITS FLAT" is the usual reply when checked. Lately got recommendations to switch to 112 as it checks better. Will let you know!

VP is NHRA's favorite for whatever reason, all others beware!

Brent:

NHRA Stockers/Super Stockers may only use "spec fuels" listed on the NHRA website under accepted products list, page 93.

All fuels on the acceptance list have a specific dielectric value range that is checked periodically throughout qualifying and the race to ensure no illegal additives are added to the fuel.

So short answer is yes, you need to use only fuels listed on the acceptance list. Some check better than others. Some manufactures have occasionally let out some bad batches that won't pass tech. As for Sunoco Purple, I have ran that fuel for 5 years with it almost always checking "Low". Talking to the national event fuel checking guy, he was up front that he see the problem with Sunoco getting low more out on the west coast than back east, so maybe there is a deterioration problem with storage, transfer and travel. My divisional tech guy also passed on that he thought Sunoco was shipped in bulk, and then pumped into barrels, allowing the possibility of more inconsistency in the fuel the farther it traveled. Seemed plausible. He mentioned that VP was canned on site and shipped from the factory which was why it probably checks more consistently.

All in all, have whatever fuel you use checked when you are at the track before you run. If you are low , you might be able to find a fresh source of better fuel from another racer to bring it up. Just ask the fuel checking guy who else is running the same fuel as you . He will have the car #s to find your secondary source. Good Luck out there!

Stuck with a drum of Sunoco purple that will not pass? VP C14+ is clear and the right mixture will fix it.
