Door handle/arm rest on stocker with cage
I am working on a roll cage for a car in stock eliminator. Is it legal to remove the stock door handle and door arm rest to have some extra room for the side bar?
Thanks Bob |

Now , if you want to put a lever style handle sticking out the top of the door panel, like a Super Gas car, I'd say don't try it |
Re: Door handle/arm rest on stocker with cage
Been told many times by several tech guys that removing the arm rest for roll bar is ok, Door handle mechanisms in Stock must remain stock. Jim

Thanks for the replies. I can leave the door latch handle where it is. The arm rest is the real problem. Looks like I can remove it though. Thanks again.

Maybe before you ditch the armrest I'd suggest you sit in the car and try closing the door without it. That was one of the things that bugged me about the previous bar in my car is no armrest to grab and close the door. A little creativity on the new bar allows me to replace the armrest now. That's just my preferance. Doug

Re: Door handle/arm rest on stocker with cage
It turns out I can't remove my door handle after all. Not because of rules but because it is all one piece. It looks separate but when I pulled the panel off it is one piece.
Is it legal to run the side bar right along the top of the handle and then bend it down to the floor just ahead of the handle? It will still be at the right height where it meets the main hoop. Also how close to the floor does the door bar have to be attached to the vertical tube going through the dash? Thanks, Bob |

Of course, you would keep the front low enough so you can get in and out. I always custom bend my side bars so I can open and close the door and not smash my elbow against it when turning the wheel. This is one of the reasons I don't use roll bar kits. |

Re: Door handle/arm rest on stocker with cage
My Nova I used to race had to remove arm rest, did'nt seem bad at first but have always bent bars to clear arm rest, door handles ever since works best in my opinion if you go below them can use them just like does'nt have roll bar.
If going to have interior I suggest you mock all bars up with all that stuff in car Had friend helping one night was strapped in, window net up, had my hand between net and doorbar on doorhandle, which I would give a pull and pull my hand out of the way just before door would close so did'nt catch my hand between bar and door, had door just barely open they motioned me out and before I could push door open and give a pull,my buddy slammed my door, and went to put me in water,he saw car not starting and pulling out, and came back,I had to motion him to come open door so I could get my hand out could'nt open it with right hand or get the left out.LOL Mike Taylor 3601 |
Re: Door handle/arm rest on stocker with cage
Found I had enough room with the side bars to add them to the Camaro. Got two sitting on the counter waiting for me to re-install the door panels...I will be much happier with them in the car.
