1970-72 classification of 68 chevelle ss 396/375

What classes in 1970-72 would this car fit in stock and super stock? Thanks!

Trick question? You can't fit a 1968 in a 70-72 class. 1968 Chevelle would run A-B-C in stock...E-F-G in superstock.

Wondering what class a 68 chevelle ss 396/375 would have been in in the early seventies. Both stock and super stock.

Stock D or E?

Anybody? I know Paul Ceasrine's pretty good on questions like this......

really hard to say. probably was rated lower than 375 in early 70's and different for stock, superstock, and likely manual or auto. for sure pre "AHFS" days..

Building a barn find super stock clone. Basically everything is early period correct except the engine, a 496.

Think it is a ss/ea but not sure what the classifications were then. Were stick and auto together? Anyone got 70-72 rule books that can look it up?

if it is being built for competition now what does it matter what it was in 1970 to 1972?

According to my handy "1973" rule book, Super Stock was in half pound increments with A being 6.00-6.49 B-6.50-6.99 and so on down to O where they went to one pound increments.

In stock, A was 8.00-8.49 B-8.50-8.99 and so on down to O, where they went to one pound increments.

No idea what the horsepower rating was then.

1973 was also the year stock rules changed quite a bit but I don't remember if the weight breaks changed.

I'll correct myself. In 1968 I think a chevelle was SS/D. Then the weight breaks changed a bunch in 69. A 68 Camaro 375 went from C to E. 68 chevelle would now be SS/F in 69

Not going to be a race car, just a street cruiser that look like it would have in 1970-72. Will have a 496 in it but everything outside would be period correct. Can someone run the numbers and tell me if it would have been a ss/d e or f car? Was the "a" added for automatic at this time? Thanks!

70 -71 was a whole different deal from 72

69 Chevelle 427/425 @8 lbs was C/Stock in 71...Would have been A/Stock in 72

In the seventies a 68 Chevelle SS was a stick only with the 396 375 HP. Today you can run with an automatic

What do you mean by "period correct" on the outside, Bert? With the stock paint job, Rally Wheels and white lettered tires it looks period correct already to me. Maybe you'll want Cragar S/S mags or Purple Hornies for exhaust. Keep posting pics,, I'm sure it will look fine.

Had a 68 SS in high school '83 and built a 427 for it. Sold it in '98 to build first super stock car. Found this body 3 years ago and been gathering parts. Want to look like it was found in a barn as raced in super stock ~1970-73? Have Lakewood ladder bars, moroso mech tach, S&w gauges, winters shifter. Looking for some super tricks or nice cragars for front. Thinking about even adding tow hooks to front. Want to add class designation letters to windows but not sure which class.

Have 496 done, should make 670hp with 4000 stall and 4:11. At 3800, hope will run low 11s- high 10s.

Plan to have done for Hot Rod Power Tour in Charlotte in June.

Still did not get a good answer for what super stock class a 68 chevelle 396/375 fit into in 1971? Five weeks into the project from a rusty car to a completely redone frame off and set the body back on. Can't wait for Hot Rod power tour!

You might wanna do a little research. I don't think the Super Trick wheels came out until late 70's

I'm thinking someone else needs to do a little research,,, Jenkins had them on the Vega in'72,, theres photos of Landy's Challenger with them before that,, and I bought my first set in '73,, thats early 70s, so they would've been available for a S/S Chevelle in full dress back then. My 2 cents.
