Weird idea for qualifying

The fans get confused seeing some racers let off early in qualifying. Just for bench racing sake what about this. At divisional races when time permits all S/SS cars still get 3 time runs. Only 1 of them is your OFFICIAL qualifying run. Let’s say time run #3 is your official qualifying run. If someone is unable to make the 3rd time( OFFICIAL ) qualifying time trial due to rain or breakage then your most recent run down the drag strip would become your OFFICIAL qualifying time. Whether it be TT1 or TT2. There would not be a qualifying sheet until after qualifying was over. This way No one would know who qualified where until it’s too late. There could be several adjustments added to this. Most other qualifying rules would still be in effect. Yes I know I am problem off my rocker but it is a good conversation topic. Hope all you guys have a Happy New Year. Please don’t trash me too much, just having fun. Thanks my friends and may you win more races in 2020 than you did in 2019.

Pretty much how it works now just not officially

Being that Stock and SS are supposed to be performance based classes it would make sense to attach something to Qualifying. Money, points, trophy, green hat, some sort of badge of honor. A first round bye for number 1 can be helpful. I'm sure there are better ideas than the current situation .

I like that idea.

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

It would be nice to have some sort of incentive to run flat out. Maybe all top 20 qualifiers get a small points bonus of some sort. Maybe #1 could also get a hat or something. I’m sure some hat company could donate a box of hats if nhra didn’t want to provide them.

Trying to keep their AHFS average down, playing the ladder, prevent guys they may get paired with from knowing what they could actually run.

Also, I can assure you if you make a pass too far under your index you can get you some hateful text messages. Sometimes before you even get off the scales. Been there.

How about getting a sponsor to pay a lot of money to number one qualifier>Would this be an incentive to run

fast ???

Number 1 qualifier is immune from ANY ahfs. If you think you have what it takes then let it fly and hope someone else isn't just a little faster. Then put cash in the pot for number 1

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

Top qualifier's at Div.5 points races you would get a hat,and a sponsor would kick in $100.And they would post a pic of the three low qualifier's in STK,SS,COMP in ND.Now the only "prize" at a Nat.event would be a possible trip to the barn...gsa612

I was not aware #1 immune from AHFS. I used to do it, if we had an odd number of cars, for the first round bye. Caught so much crap over it, I stopped. Guess others were not aware either. I just keep mine slowed down now. Doesn’t seem like racing.
More like ET brackets, which is not really racing.

90 points for #1 could actually have an impact on some championships too, but I like the idea a little more than trying not to be too fast or effect your average

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

Why not give points based on your qualifying order in reverse order:; in 50 car field no 1 gets 50 pts no2 gets 49 pts etc etc no 50 qualifyer gets 1 point. This would encourage people to try and qualify better. Don't seem like it would be too hard to keep up with.

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

You don't want to give too many points for #1.If you WIN stock elim. you get around 130 pts.a race. Say if you were to give 90 or 50 pts. for #1,and someone has an obscure combo that's a constant top qualifier. You could win the Championship by winning very few rounds.I would say the equivalent of a round win, maybe 20 pts.?...gsa612

I was not aware of no AHFS either for the #1 qualifier. Interesting.

Really like that idea Bill Bogues.

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

Stock, super stock, and comp have been strategy not performance classes for a long time. It takes qualifying strategy, picking a combo that can run different classes and finish line driving.

Until these classes go back to handicap racing with ET'S based off the best run in the class, Car/Driver can only race 1 class a year, nothing will change.

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

When watching us (S/SS) run especially in qualifying, which is confusing to the average spectator seems like a problem that could be addressed. No spectators leads to no races. It used to mean something to be the fastest guy. It just made the other racers step up there game. I truly don’t know what the answer should be. But hopefully we can get the answer soon before we lose the fans. I still love these 2 classes. They are what what started every other class. Maybe some sort of a qualifying Wally would perk everybody up.

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

Folk sorry but Points are earned not given to the fastest car that day
What a dumb *** idea. .So the fastest car gets a huge advantage in point championships
Think about it. How many of us can be that fast
Not many.

Re: Weird idea for qualifying

How about if NHRA keeps track of all top qualifier's at all Nat. events. At the end of the year the person with the best average gets a plaque for "performance",and some cash if any mfg's would be willing to step up.This way you don't give qualifying pts.that would affect the Championship, but still recognize performance...gsa612

I will never get to be the low qualifier. But why punish other people just because you can’t be the low qualifier.?

Good point!
NHRA used to give out "Top Qualifier" awards.

A thousand dollars for #1 qualifiers would certainly effect the AHFS corrections on many combos.

Here is what Division 5 has for qualifying bonus and points at divisional races. #1 of each category at the end of the season, receives a champion style jacket and custom embroidered hat for their accomplishments. Also for the #1 qualifier at select divisional races money from Fast Shocks.

I won that award the first year it came out in D5 but can't remember the sponsor that started it or the year. Old age is setting in fast , lol , but it was a good program.
