Have a few questions about brakes
I have a 68 Mustang that I bracket race. It has drum brakes all the way around.
I am looking to swap to some discs on the front now, and on the back at a later time. I am looking at Strange, Wilwood, and Aerospace. Just wondering what direction I should go. I have heard some different things about Master Cylinders, something about a mopar or even a ranger MC. Can someone give some insight into that and what would be the best option for me. I run Weld Alumastar in the front and Billet Comp 5 in the rear, will there be any can of clearance issues? |
Re: Have a few questions about brakes
I have aerospace on my car. I went with them because they are local to me. I have been very happy with their brakes. Very low drag. Good customer service if you need parts or pads. Make sure you follow the installation instructions to the letter when installing. It takes a bit of adjustment and shim to get them perfectly aligned.
I have the Mopar master cylinder on my car. |
Re: Have a few questions about brakes
So is that a aerospace mopar master cylinder or just like a stock mopar master cylinder

I used some Wilwoods on my '68 mostly because I found a good used set of street brakes for the front that I wanted in case I put the car back on the road. I used drag race brakes for the rear and their master cylinder.

TBM's are an excellent option also. I'm a dealer for them and would be happy to help you out.

Re: Have a few questions about brakes
I have had Strange and Wilwood on the rear of my 68 and both did the job well. Front is a different issue. First kit was Wilwood street that converted the drum front spindle to disc and worked well when the car was street/strip. Strange stopped better but didn't release the caliper like expected. I currently have dropped all my pennies on Baer SS4 Staging Brakes and they look good but haven't had a full season on them yet.
Manual or Power? I gave up trying to get my 75 yo leg to go manual and am returning to power with a Leeds MC. The whole MC thing is a big pile of math. You need to know the number of pistons and area per caliper as well as the bore of the MC to correctly select a good caliper/MC combo. Look up how to choose a brake system for drag racing or master cylinder math on the net. Here's a link to Mark Williams https://www.markwilliams.com/braketech.html |
