I went for simple as well. Have a button switch that is activated by the clutch pedal. Set it so when my foot is to the floor the low side is on. Not much chance of me putting the pedal down far enough on a shift to re-activate so I don't worry about it. Ideally, the micro switch for 1st gear only engagement would be the way to go.
