Default GT/EA Vega question

I just saw a '72 Vega on facebook with a 2013 6.2 LS engine running in GT/EA trim. Someone brought up that they thought GT was only for cars originally manufactured with V6 or V8 engines and of course the mighty Vega only came with a 4 cyl. engine. Can anyone clear this up for me?

I saw the pictures too.It was competing at the Great Lakes Stock/Super Stock Series which is a fun event. There are no heads up runs and not all cars are technically NHRA/IHRA legal.
Nice car,but I see your point.

That's George krieger's Vega. It's show quality and fast. Since it's running GT Super Stock it can run ANY engine that GM made from BBC, SBC, Pontiac, etc. Luke

So I could put an LS engine in a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 and run in Super Stock GT? I wasn't aware of this.I was under the assumption that I had to run an Oldsmobile engine, but it is a GM car.You may have given me an idea for the future.

Lenny Williams runs a Buick 455 in his GT Camaro.

As a purely hypothetical example could you claim your car is a 1971 or 1972 body, install a 1970 Olds engine and then claim it to be a "GT" class car in Super Stock?

Same deal as the Cobalts, Sunfires, Grand Am's etc.. They can all run whatever GM produced that's in the guide.

When Camaro and Firebird went away (2000 model year), NHRA was approached with the prospect of waiving the "must have been available with a 4-cylinder or V6", specifically to allow Cavaliers and Sunfires. The argument that won Danny and Bruce over was that earlier J-bodies had been available with V6 engines, and the later versions were essentially the same car. Also, with Camaro and Firebird disappearing, both GM and NHRA wanted a replacement, and J-car fit the bill.

How about a Mopar engine in an AMC for SS/GT? The AMC can run a Dana or 8.75 rearend.
