If you want to go 2.5 or more under with this combo you will have about 900.00 in pistons 600.00 in rings another 1500.00 in valves and springs about 500.00 in cam and lifters if you do that cheap plus all the rest, and last i checked this type of truck isn't that cheap as a core. So a decent one could be built for about 12 to 15k if you did alot of your own labor witch by todays dollars would be about the best bang for the buck out there!!

Ed Wright is correct. The only 8 cyl. you could get in a '86 1/2 ton was a Q-jet 305. Cast iron intake. Same exact motor thats in a '82-84 Camaro rated at 243 hp except you can use a bigger cam in the truck. I bought one new (short bed, step side). It was either that or a 4.3 V6.
After being absent for several years, 1987 was the first year you could get a 350 back in a 1/2 ton. And it was a TBI. With a 3/4 ton or bigger, it was a whole different ball game.

Mine was so stinking slow with 3.08 gears and a 700R4 it down shifted on hills on the interstate. I put a 350" TPI in it. Don't know why they didn't put those in at the factory. Liked low RPM and got better mileage than the Q Jet 305" ever did. Pretty quick compared to other pick ups.

I think the whole thing is really just an elaborate scheme intended to divert everyone's attention away from the "new" cars...LOL.
P.S. It seems to be working. |

If you read passed post of Richard Muhlenhardt, he is the person who asked for this truck to listed in guide, just guessing and he asked questions about grade points to enter indy, also he is the person who went 1.32 under at brainerd points meet. maybe richard and larry hill could have a match race in U/SA for number one qualifier at indy.Tom

In 1986, did they produce a shortwheelbased truck? And if so, what was the measurement?

They did make a short wheel base 1/2 ton. But I do not remember what it measured.
