Just hold the torch at arm's length and light it off...as long as it's burnin' you're fine! Then cut all you want...
That's how we do it when cutting / welding on natural gas lines that still have some gas in 'em. My Dad always said, "The only time you need to be scared is if the fire goes OUT!"
