Save your money. Its been proven before many years ago when NHRA allowed the iron block as a replacement for the alum. block in S/S that it makes more power. The weight difference is the only advantage of the alum. block. It has to do with heat retention. Thats my story and Im sticking to it.

Actually, most have found that when comparing blocks as close to identical as possible except material, the aluminum block moves enough to make the HP difference. Given that aluminum is much less dimensionally stable over temperature variations, several things arise due to things not staying where you want them as the block moves around.
When it comes to heads, identical heads being a given, other than material, then the heat retention theory does indeed hold. If the heads are as dimensionally identical as possible, the iron heads will make more power.

I believe Dale Howard's Camaro out of Las Vegas is an iron block, aluminum head 427 A/SA built by Gary Hettler. It runs very well.

John, I was told at one time that it was a 427/425 car with 401 heads. I think that was last year. It was for sale a while back on racing junk. It does fly, though. He's got it listed for $50K.

Alan, you're right. Gary and I talked about that combo last year at Vegas. I haven't seen Dale out for a while but that car is drop dead gorgeous. Almost as fast as Bobby D's.
