Don't be sorry,I am taking all advice on this problem.It looks like we traced the problem to the valve body.And welcome to Classracer.A lot of good people on here.

Alan ,it doesn't really matter if the check ball is there or not. If you're feeding both sides of the direct piston (center seal out and /or center ring on the pump removed) The reverse passage has to be blocked off someway. Either at the pump to case face or with the VB spacer plate feed blocked off. Have you checked that?
