The 285/265/255hp engine has the gt-40 head, flat top pistons, 4 valve reliefs, 480 lift cam.
As I said earlier the 270/250 use the gp40p head (explorer head). The 215/240 engine is basically the explorer engine, Olin Welborn had this engine in his 68 Mustang in k,l,m crate motor when was running it in IHRA a few years ago.It also has the gt40p heads. The 95 Mustang that I ran in M/cm was the 270/250 engine. I tried the 285/265 when I first built the car but found that the gt40p head were a better head and at that time was worth the 15 hp difference over the gt40 head. I believe IHRA lower the hp to 255 last year. Gary Peterson

Gary,
The 215 engine does not come with GT-40P heads.
E7TE heads.
It is based on a 92-93 motor with hyperutectic pistons and a .445 lift cam.
Explorer engines had the GT-40P heads.
Olin ran the 215 HP with the correct E7TE heads.
He may have upgraded the motor to 270 specs at a later time.
I have not spoken to him in a while.
His car is a 65 Mustang not a 68.

Chris,

No problem, just let me know.

Wow, ask and ye shall receive!

I've been running the spec's through a couple computor programs and the 215hp should run about -.400 under index...well as much as you can trust a computor. That was basically a stock 5.0 with a 750 and my mustang as it is. 4.86 gear/29.5X9/c4 with 3500 converter. With this combo my 4.86's seem too low and according to the computor 4.56's or even 4.11's seem quicker. Problem is, it shows the 750 better than a 650 and a single plane intake better than a dual plane. As we all know, a stock engine like that would benefit more from a dual plane intake and a smaller carb so I'm kind of skeptical.

How did other's make out with this combo? Was it a slug or am I on the right path? And yes -.400 seems optimistic, that's why I'm doubtful it's that good out of the box.

Thanks again,
GB2

Alex I know he had the gt40p heads the last time I saw him run his car at Rockingham. He sat the record and had to tear down. I saw the engine apart and they were the gt40p. I guess I thought it was the 215 engine. I never did run that engine so really never looked at the spec's.
Goinbroke, with the 270/250 combo I had the 4.88's,c4, 750 carb, Victor Jr.,ATI4200 convertor and 30x9 Hooiser Radials. Could run 1.00+ under eight mile, 1.30 under quarter mile. Did a lot of testing with cam timing, carbs, and intakes, rear gears and this setup was the fastest. Good luck, Gary Peterson

Thanks Gary! Just as easy to pick up an explorer engine as a mustang engine to start with I suppose. I know I'll be nowhere near that as my car isn't "scienced out" like a real stocker. That's certainly encouraging though!

One other question then, were you running aftermarket rods/pistons or stock? (and how high were you twisting it)?
