GT-40P heads were the ones put on v-8 explorers right? I don't imagine you can buy them new anymore? |

I run the 302 215/240 HP crate motor in my Probe. This is the Explorer crate engine. It has the GT40P cylinder heads. This engine was available from Ford Racing back around 2000.
Here are the specs that were sent to IHRA: ![]() This is from the 2000 Ford Racing catalog: ![]()

Alex,I see that the spec sheet that George posted shows the gt40p head on the 215/240 engine. George said they were on his Probe. I guess that is why Olin had them on his engine at Rockingham. I am glad that is cleared up, I was beginning to thank my old age was catching up with me. I see the cam lift is smaller than I thought it was.
Goinbroke:The last gt40p head that I bought were on craigs list. The first set I bought were new. The hard part of running this head ,is with angle plug, you have to buy headers that fit the gt40p head. Good luck. Gary Peterson |

Of course, with all the different design headers out there, one would have to experiment, but it is possible to use regular headers on P heads.

Did some searching and gt40 were on explorers to 96. In 97 they went to gt40P heads.
As far as headers, the ones I have now are not optimal so I will be building a set of 1 1/2" primary approx 38-40" long. I'm leaning towards tri Y and possibly crossing pipes under car to have 180headers. Lots of idea's, now to find the engine! Nothing around here but there HAS to be explorers in the junkyards. I'll do a search after I get back from BC. (hmm, check out the junk yards in BC while on Christmas vacation?....bet THAT won't go over good with the ol lady hehe) Perhaps this is a dumb question but I also saw the higher lift in the IHRA spec's online and assumed (like a stocker) I could run any duration. According to Georges sheet, the lift is lower and there are spec's on the amount of duration. Is part of the crate motor spec's the exact cam you must use (not just lift)? Must I use the F4TE-6250-BA cam or any cam with the same lift? |

An IHRA crate motor can use any duration, they only check the lift. Not sure why, but the IHRA tech sheet wanted the duration. They probably use the same form for pure stock specs. Did you use any kind of modeling software for your header design? I used the recomendations from Pipemax and came up with:
1- 5/8" tube for 8 inches 1- 3/4" tube for 8 inches 1- 7/8" tube for 16 inches 3- 1/2" collector
