Yes.......1980 would work just fine... We ran a 929D for dwell camshaft and had to re-shim the springs almost every run and if you got just a little crazy in the water you ended up with deeper valve reliefs and new valves.....But it was legal lift, duration & overlap, because it was checked more than once... It was a lot of work, but that's what made Stock what it was..... You had to invest your knowledge, time & money to compete, because performance mattered..... You either embraced the rule structure or you raced in another eliminator and "The Farmer" was there to see that it happened..... The present rules with the soft index and no tech inspection (to speak of) allow the present crop of Stockers can run over 200 runs with zero maintenance.... I even remember 1st round ducks, that couldn't run the index, but they worked on their cars so they could..... Today, everybody qualifies and gets a participation medal.... Just sayin'
