To the year there was SS,A/S down to E/S and you had to win class to run for stock eliminator. 20' per class head start. Many were not even born yet.

Class winners and then the fastest qualifiers for the 128 car field. Class winners still have to run on or under the index to be included in the field of 128. Just like it used to be.

This would make Indy more cutthroat and return the suspense of making it into the field.

And valve spring rule. Square cams, "enhanced" heads and intakes would all go away by themselves if the motor can't spin high enough to use them.

And ALL of the replacement parts mistakes and "buddy deals". NHRA should set a "reset" date, sit the Glendale boys down with the SRAC members and "reset" the Tech Guide to about 1980.

I'd be happy with 1975 or 1977 but Jeff's was the most fun.

It was 25' per class around here. 250' max spot. With flagmen. Heck, I liked running off records too. Had to win class to run eliminations. First trip to Pomona for me, Sonny Bryant sent me right back to Oklahoma first round of class. Not so many classes then, either. Bye runs for class was a bit unusual. Any old thing will run under these indexes now. They have dumbed it way down.

They should reset back to where I have an advantage. Just me personally, my own agenda. Other than that, what Billy said.

I remember the days when we had a flagman and a back road. Come to think of it I think I remember a time when the wheel first came out.

What year did the NHRA first allow aftermarket heads and blocks in SS?

My Approved block won't take stock heads and the Accepted Replacement heads.I have came with valves that are too big to be legal.

So, a year before any of that.

1997 Stock is where IHRA Pure Stock is today.
Can always run PS just backing off on the cam and springs.
Of course have to add ear saving Mufflers and a few other minor things.

Pure Stock has improved reliability from the upgraded parts and safety benefits of regular stock over the years.

Plus, my company is sponsoring the IHRA Pure Stock Challenge.

Ask me more !

Yes.......1980 would work just fine...

We ran a 929D for dwell camshaft and had to re-shim the springs almost every run and if you got just a little crazy in the water you ended up with deeper valve reliefs and new valves.....But it was legal lift, duration & overlap, because it was checked more than once...

It was a lot of work, but that's what made Stock what it was.....

You had to invest your knowledge, time & money to compete, because performance mattered.....

You either embraced the rule structure or you raced in another eliminator and "The Farmer" was there to see that it happened.....

The present rules with the soft index and no tech inspection (to speak of) allow the present crop of Stockers can run over 200 runs with zero maintenance....

I even remember 1st round ducks, that couldn't run the index, but they worked on their cars so they could.....

Today, everybody qualifies and gets a participation medal....

Just sayin'
