Here's a novel idea! How about the NHRA has a decent payout and decals can be run if you want to support a product or manufacturer. It's always bugged me when I read or hear NHRA bragging about the huge purse for an event, then realize the majority is from contigency. (some which may or may not get paid) They are taking credit for something they didn't do. The sanctioning body should get the sponsors, collect the money and pay it out fairly.
I'm putting on a all Ford race here in September that will have over $15,000.00 in payouts. All coming from some generous sponsors. No decals required. You race.. win, r/u or semi's and get money! http://www.megafordweekend.com/ |

I digress that I don't own a computer so I have to use public computers to partake in stuff like this, but that said...now for the rest of the story. The only reason that I referrenced my 3rd round loss ('98 Mile Highs), was because I know good and well that I shouldn't have even made it past rnd #1! However, since that first rnd opponent disrespected me (as it seemed like you were to decal less race cars), I felt it necessary to mention what can happen to people who disrespect others just because what they have isn't like the majority of race cars (such as yours). I earned my 2nd rnd opponents respect because he pushed the tree and (unfortunately for him), redlit. He and Jody respected me for my efforts even though my car wasn't up to par with the index (like theirs were), thus the comparison. You and Dinsdale, bring up some great logic about the use of the decals, however they truly only matter if you make it to the finals of a race, or are the class winner---with all of the greats in our two categories nowadays not even the honorable "Dan Fletcher", "Peter Biondo", "Lee Zane", "Mark Faul", "Jody & Toby Lang", can enter events and assume that they're going home with their possible piece of the winners contingency pie for either/both of our categories! Therefore, it really doesn't matter if you're decal'ed or not until you get there! Yes I know that once you do get there all of that extra money will greatly enhance your efforts for a future race (because I came within two round wins of getting a piece of that pie myself during the '2006 Mile High Nat's. I however was more interested in doing something that no fwd stocker has done since "Mark Yacavonne" at the '86 Summer Nat's @ E'town...win Stock Eliminator! That would've meant more to me with my (then) decal less car body (I had a few on the rear quarter glass, but I was so happy to be racing a car that looked as good as yours and every body elses that I'd race with in this circuit, that I didn't want to spoil the nice paint job with stickers...the loss of extra contingency money would've been ok, because what would've mattered most is that I would've done something with an AMERICAN car that was insulted by the writers of "Consumer Reports", "Car and Driver", and others of their ilk, who showed more gratitude for the imports of that decade ('80's)...by the way Chip, if you ever get to Janesville, Wi., please thank the UAW's of GM there for making such a great car as my Cavalier! While my Z24 is still capable of racing and competing with Detroits best rear-wheel-drives (as are most all of the fwd Detroit made fwd cars/vans), the cars that those mag writers favored are most likely either crushed, or in wrecking yards, because they're sure not on the public roads here in metro Phoenix...do you see any '80's imports in your area...according to those writers you should, because they were supposed to last forever (they were GOD'S gift to any roads they rolled on)!!?? I know I got off topic, but winning a race with my car so I can rub it in their warped minded noses would mean more to me than any contingency money I could earn from having lots of decals on my car!!! Just holding that Wally and going home with the $1200.00 from NHRA, would've been fine with me...after all 3/4ths of the field at that and most races go home with $0.00 decaled or not!!! Finally, I'm sure you can bite back, but no one with a decal less racecar was belittling you like it seemed you were them, thus I'm glad that you modified the other key word you used in your comments that started my involvement in this post (rhymes with cupid, but isn't nearly as nice)!!!

To this and Dinsdales similar posts, we can only dream??? However hopeless as it may seem though, other things that were unthinkable have happened in our sport, so who knows???

Do any of you remember the Alky Funny car that ran in Div 4 with no decals. It was a very pretty car and a nice operation. It was back in the 90's I think, poor memory....No telling how much money the owner gave up when winning. I think the guy was able to race out of his own pocket for his kids. I think they were multi div champs & finished high in the National points. Sure wish my memory worked better.

Adger, are you talking about Joe Penland from Texas? He won the TA/FC world championship in '95 or so with Steve Boggs tuning. Very few, if any, decals were on the car. A year or so later, he quit, because the Divisional tracks in Div 4 weren't nice enough to race on, in his words.

Mike,
Thanks for the refresher.... :~) Yes. he might have said that about quiting, but I think the race car was for his boy and then his girl went into horses. Top notch all the way! Running with only the requied decals was his deal. Someone must have told him about all the contingency hassels & headaches that he could avoid. Beautiful car and great opreation. Winning the championship says something about someone knowing how to get the car down any track!
