Well we won and much to our surprise we got paid by a check written from a local bank. Everybody we knew had left the track and we didn't have enough for gas and tolls to get home. And the bank was closed the next day for the holiday. We had to stay at the track without a thing to eat till Tuesday morning. When we got the check cashed and went home. This was way before cell phones and our families were frantic.

My partner, Harry Sparks and I, took our '57 Chevy sedan delivery (with the requisite Dual-Range flat-pan hydro) to an NHRA Points race in Blair, Nebraska and were told we couldn't go down the drag strip until we filled the holes in the dash (mainly radio and heater control openings) with metal! We found a pair of scissors, some empty beer cans, and duct tape, presto: and were allowed to run! I think that was in 1968...
I bought a brand new Rochester 4-jet carb for that car (a 220hp 283) only to have it rejected in tech because they said the superceded carb was a 283/327 "one size fits all" replacement and was too big. Had to hit the junkyards looking for the "right" WCFB... I was a local tech guy, myself, but I tried to use a modicum of common sense about stuff like that. I did toss a guy for having a complete Studebaker rear end (exposed axle nut and all) under his '55 Olds... lol! Tech ain't what it used to be....
