Saw one last Friday night at the track. Kid driving it with 20" looking rims/tires and it went 8.45 in the 1/8th. Not a bad looking car in person and I'm a Ford guy. But others here are right it looks like it is from the same mold as the Dodge

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is only marginally smaller than what a Camaro should be (overall length 175") and has a curb weight of 3,060 pounds.
I realize a Wankel is a lot lighter than a big V8, but that's a huge difference in weight. I don't think than ANY of the "big 3" (that's a joke, now) worked very hard to keep weight off their new ponycars. Too bad; if they had, they'd be REALLY fast, with those engines!

The new V6 they are putting in the Camaro is a direct-injection motor that's also in the Cadillac. It makes over 300 horsepower. It could run 8.45 in the eighth, I think, with the right tires.
