Default Trailor owners - New padlocks that accept vehicle ignition key

From Hemmings -

BOLT Locks
If you stow your vintage vehicle in a trailer during off hours while attending a national meet (or other regional events), then chances are you’ve had to carry around another set of keys to the padlocks that keep the rear door secure. And we’re willing to bet that you are constantly checking your pockets to make sure you still have that extra set of keys. Thanks to the STRATTEC Security Corporation, that second set is no longer required.

They’ve recently released the new BOLT (Breakthrough One-key Lock Technology) series of locks, which are specifically designed to be unlocked with your modern car or truck key: The locks incorporate a patented, automotive-style cylinder with a shutter and six-plate tumbler. They are not pre-programmed; all you have to do is insert your vehicle key, turn once, and it’s automatically programmed to that key. Multiple locks can be programmed to a single key as well. The BOLT locks feature the highest corrosion resistance rating and are nearly impossible to pick or bump.

Currently, they retail for $28 each in padlock form, but they are also available in 5/8- and ½-inch receiver locks, cable lock, spare tire lock and motorcycle lock, with others to soon follow. More information, including an order form, can be found on their website, www.STRATTEClock.com, or by calling 414-247-3333. For a closer look, the BOLT locks will also be unveiled during the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Marketing Association) convention from November 3-6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I am a Locksmith for 26 years...haven't seen this new product from Strattec yet....but beware that Kwikset has come out with the smartkey locks for residential applications that rekey similiar to what you describe here and have been giving alot of trouble since being sold at Home Depots across the country.

Strattec is a quality company as I use quite a bit of there products and tools....although something that rekeys on it's own sounds like it has too many internal parts to last as long as a conventional lock.
