I've been racing the same car (1969 Z/28) now from 1971, brackets first, then to Stock Eliminator. It's been an E or F car since 1973 or so. Even though I race in Stock, I still keep it street legal. Plates and Insurace with full exhaust.

Interesting Cobra Jet history. I used to hang around Brandon and Turnage with my dad when was a kid. The first of the two Nitro 9's is Donnie's car. Jeff Velde bought the second car when B&T got Glidden's pinto. Jeff bought the pinto and sold the second Nitro 9 at that point. I didn't know to whom he sold it. Maybe Jeff will chime in, but there were two of them. Jeff's must be the one that was seen at auction.......My car did come from the Dunahoos as Donnie Jr. said, and it was originally Jim Morgan's and was built by Ken Kier. I first saw the car in 1982 at the Gators right after Jim finished it. Never thought then that I would own it later down the road. Maybe I'll have my junk out to the track this year. I have not had time to work on it for a while. The .3 index change kinda gets me re-interested.

I was just talking to my uncle about this thread, he said Brandon and Turnage had gotten Glidden's car and it was tubbed and at that time SS's couldn't be tubbed so they sold it. He can't remember to who. As soon as they sold it, they allowed tubbed cars. They knew of a street driven one that was local. They bought it and built the car in like a month he said and he bought the car from them in '75. It was the Nitro 9 car he had until '81. He sold the car to Bruce Miller in Illinois and then Bruce sold it to Larry Buckingham. We don't know what happened to the car after that. Would sure like to know!!

Tom,
Those pic's will bring back some memories. After Jeff sold the car to Bruce, he started to build another 68 and had the cage and chassis done, before he sold it and bought the pinto that ran B/FX. That last picture might be that car. I might be wrong but I don't think it's the Nitro 9 car. Nitro 9 had hood pin's. That car doesn't have them and the rear quarter reflecter lights are the inside the fender ones while Nitro 9 had the outside the fender bolt on ones. If I get some more info I let you guy's know. It's great to see these old pic's, we had a lot of fun at the races back then. |
