I have most of the Summernationals programs from the 70's, which had the entry lists printed on plain paper bound inside glossy outer pages. I think that during that time NHRA had yet to assign permanent numbers based on the driver's home division. So that the numbers were basically eliminator- and event-based and could have been used by more than one driver. That would also explain why Lingenfelter (IN) and Humphrey (NC) both had numbers in the 1000's.
