First off, there was never a Boss 429 Mach 1, the only Mustangs ever sold by Ford with a Boss 429 engine, were the 1969 & 70 Boss 429 Mustangs, which were NOT a Mach 1. Now, in 1971, there were Mach 1`s with 429 CJ or SCJ engines, but these are iron headed wedge engines, whereas a BOSS 429 has aluminum (semi) Hemi chamber heads. There is likely some confusion, as there were 429 Thunder Jet engines, as well as 429 Cobra Jet, & 429 SUPER Cobra Jet, and in some early literature, the Boss 429 Hemi was called the 429 CJ H.O.
To further muddy the waters, the 429 4 barrel Thunder Jet was rated at 360HP, the 429CJ at 370, the 429SCJ at 375, the Boss 429 was also rated at 375. The ThunderJet engines had hyd. cams and an Autolite 4 barrel carb, the Cobra Jet had a hotter hyd. cam, bigger valve & port heads, with a Rochester Quadrajet, the Super Cobra Jet used a solid cam and a Holley 780. In a 70 or 71 Torino or Cyclone, you could have gottern either the 429 ThunderJet, Cobra Jet, or Super Cobra Jet, in the 71 Mustang, only the CJ or SCJ were available. The only Cobra Jet available in a Mustang from 68 thru 70, was the FE 428. Now, wasn`t that simple?! ![]()
