Some Pontiac engines, for example, may be something that would "drop like a rock" if you over gear. High torque, poor flowing heads would not like over zealous gearing.
If in doubt, it is far greater to under gear it than over gear it.

Our 6 cyl is WAY over geared ! 5.13 with a 2.08 low (P/G) and 26" tall tires....1000' it was done but it needed all that gear to get it off the line & moving
