The 65 Malibu SS Coupe is in the guide with the 396/375 4 speed only. It's a natural B/S car. The convertible is not in the guide.

Thumbs up Re: cars that were built but not in the guide?

There is a REAL and original Z-16 in Milwaukee with 7200 miles ! All original w/funky hubcaps ! He's a friend of mine, and he bought it new ! He drives it at night, because he got sick of people following him , wanting to know It is a real one , and does he want to sell it ! The car is flawless, as in like the day he got it ! He refers to the car as his TAX FREE 401 plan ! ...........Later, John

The convertible Z-16, by the way, belonged to Dan Blocker, better known as "Hoss" Cartwright.

Alan, I recently read (over on a Z-16 site) that only 65 of these "original" Z-16 Chevelles can now be accounted for, and the lone Z-16 SS convertible is not one of them.....and yes, those "simulated magnesium wheel covers" sure were ugly. They also were supposedly optional on regular 1965 Chevelle SS cars.

A closer look at some stuff I have read reveals that most consider the convertible to be something of a hoax. The car I saw that was supposed to be "the" Z-16 convertible, and also supposed to be a gift to Dan Blocker from Chevrolet (they were a big advertiser on Bonanza) was identical in color to the one car that is verified to be his.

There are two problems that I had forgotten. First, Chevrolet does not list having built even one convertible, and they also do not list one as being built with an automatic.

The Z-16 that is verified to have been Dan Blocker's car is butternut yellow hard top with a black top.

The one convertible I saw was butternut yellow with a black convertible top and black interior. It also had a 400 transmission with an odd looking console. The timing cover on that car looked different as well, and it sounded like it had a two gear cam drive, if you've ever heard a Chevrolet big block with one of the original two gear cam drives and reverse rotation camshaft, you almost always know one if you hear it. Chevrolet says no such car was ever built, and the documentation on this car has been claimed to be forged.

I had forgotten about this until I was reminded of it this morning after I posted that.
