Assuming the vent tube is the highest point in the carburetor, measure from the vent tube to the hood. Minimum from vent tube to hood 2.5".

The more, the better. But I have less than 1.5" with no apparent issues and that's with the air cleaner assembly removed! FWIW, I recently browsed through a book by Smokey Yunick and 3/4" was mentioned as being the absolute minimum. Don't know if some carb's are more sensitive than others. I have a Holley. Underhood airflow/turbulence may have an affect with a aircleaner baseplate being helpful.

With early cars that have a lot of reinforcement under the hood, you can go with less. Later model hoods, and/or fiberglass hoods, can bow at high speeds reducing the clearance.

Oh, is that what it is. I always thought my ultra-powerful engine was sucking the hood in...

I have about 2 feet LOL.
Hood scoop is of no use, air intake is out the bottom.

I have a flat hood, and some steel fenders ready to paint.
I predict I'll pickup half a second. Bring on the DP's and CJ's
