Mike, Have you or your dad ask Billy Baker? I am ssure that he can answer your timing question. Don't think that the rule concerning valve train ssupport has been relaxed however. I am sure that Billy can tell you about your other stuff as I know that Dick worked with that combo in stock and super stock. Myron Stutes Columbus (X 3195 stock Nhra-now stock racer in remission)

Thanks Myron. i will have to look him up! the stud gurdal i was refering to was on the main caps, and far as the webbing in the block being to weak! but thanks for the help, i need all i can get lol

I just sold ours, no girdle nothing special speed pro motor, it liked 32-34. It did not like a square lobe cam!!!!! Get a easy smoooooooth ramp. 6500 max rpm

Send a PM to Tom Rix he is always more than willing to help Buick guys out.He ran a Buick in Top Stock and it was very competitive in the first season.Good luck and welcome to the dark side LOL

Mike I have raced 455 for a few years(lol) and have run the 350 the last year and half because the 350 make's alittle more hp per cubic in. I just got a new cam for the 455 and should have the 455 back in car soon. Ok back to your question, I run 38 or 39 degrees of timing. I use the MSD Dist. with all timing in at 3000 rpm in both motor combo's. The reason your stock 455 motor has a 5000rpm range is valve float from lifter preload (AKA) pushrods down in the lifter . I do not run any studs or girdle's for crank or valvetrain, RPM wise I spin my motor's in 5800 to 6400 rpm with 4.10 or 4.30 ring& pinion. Thanks for all the help guys, I had talked to Bill Baker last night, and he told me the same thing, dont realy need the main cap gerdal! said make sure the oiling system was perfect and shouldent have much problems! What about this core shift i keep reading about? Is this a big problem for our motors? And is bullet the place to call for a buick stocker cam?

Im gona try to get the carb out to Mike Walter soon if i can, to get fresh. And am still trying to find a machine shop around my area that i trust with a buick motor!

Dean the Baker boys are good people to talk to. They bleed Buick red. As far as main cap girdle not necessary, if you are starting a build find a later block, 75 or 76 as I found they seem to be the better ones. I used a 75 motor for my SS motor and after 220 runs on the short block all seem o.k. I spin the motor to 6600 through the traps but have tried as high as 7000 rpm. I should be in Columbus for the sportnationals this weekend if you are there look me up and I will try to help you some. Johnny Ulinskas ss/ka 3356.

The Buick GS Nationals are normally held in Bowling Green, Kentucky every May. This year the track was flooded and the event was rescheduled for October 20-23. If you can make the trip it is a good place to talk to a lot of Buick engine builders and racers.
The swap meet is pretty good also. I am going to be selling my 455 Buick parts there. Let me know if you need extra heads, block, intake manifolds, Q-jets, etc. My son lives in Norwalk, Ohio and we are going there this weekend. Call my cell phone 231-740-5534 if interested. Fred Lee

Mike I think Parsons and Myers are fairly close to you and I can highly recommend them. Hot Rod is as good as anyone doing stock eliminator type machine work and Bruce is very smart with cam combinations and everything else.
