not enough side preload also it might be worth pulling the axles and seeing if the bearing is to loose on the carrier ,,,some one could have honed the bearing out to set the side preload with having to press the bearing on and off gmonde

Ed, I still have my case strecher I built to set up Dana rears. It makes setting side pre load easy. Looks like the shim between the spool and bearing let go, spun out.
Bearing could have failed and let the pre load go. That is the side that takes the biggest load on the hit...At one time Dana's were all we could get to stay in our 12 and 13 lb per cu in Modified cars when you let out the clutch @ 10,000. 6.50 and 6.17 gears lasted nearly 50 runs. Give me a call if you need any help/tips.
