After viewing this video it looks like the correct use of many required safety equipment items saved this guy. As a NHRA chassis inspector, one thing that stands out to me in this crash is the rule requiring a rocker bar as part of the SFI rollcage spec. The car takes a hard hit in the driverside rocker bar area when it lands on top of the concrete guardwall. The results of the hit in the rocker bar area can be seen later in the video.

There are always factors that go into causing an accident to happen. While not a complete assertion of survival, the correct use of required safety equipment definitely increases your chances of "walking away" from an incident.

The next time you make a pass down the track, be sure you pull your driver restraint belts tight just in case something unforseen was to happen.
