Mr. Bowles, I was at the 1979 Fallnationals in Seattle, and I gotta say, your Dads Fairmont Super Modified was very memorable. As I recall, it not only won Modified Eliminator at Seattle, it also won either best appearing or best engineered. What ever became of the Fairmont? That was one of my all time favorite cars.
Rory,

Being a newbie, I don't want to get busted for hi-jacking the thread, but to answer your question, The Fairmont never left Dad's ownership. It's safe and sound in the shop. I'd be glad to answer any questions if you (or anyone else) would like to PM me. It won Best Appearing Car at Seattle.

Ed Nowakowski (I hope I got that right!) took the Fairmont from a very rough Don Hardy roller to a beautiful show piece. Ed had an equally beautiful pearl white Mustang named Mean Disposition that ran S/S

Here's an early shot most have never seen of the Coal Digger. The car was driven home from the dealership to the garage to start getting it race ready. It came from the dealer with a Mach 1 decal on the left fender only, but the car was a Boss 351 new, then later rebadged to run the Cleveland.

Thumbs up Re: Best Mustang Super Stock-All Time?

Dont forget Jim Morgan from Maryland and his S/S 428 Mustangs. He was probaly the only Mustang racer using a 12 bolt Chevy rear back in the day. He never won a natioal event but he was a 2 time Div. 1 Champion, many time class winner, and one heck of a good engine builder today.

That would be the one...that's an "official" NHRA photograph, taken at Seattle. I have the 8"x10" of that. If there's interest, tell me which forum is best, and I'll post some more Fairmont pictures.

Thanks for the welcome, now what about those Mustangs???

Here's one of the 1976 Indy final that Kyle Carrothers sent me a few years ago. I have no idea where/who he stole it from! : )

I've seen the finishline shot of Harold and Ray, but what year was that ('82?)? It's hard to believe that car never won a national event, but the "climate" back then wasn't very favorable to Ford.

I rember watching the Coal Digger at my local track (Paducah, Ky.) when it was new. Many times it was Bennet vs Bowles, so it was always a good race.

Larry,

As far as I know, Paducah was the last track the car went down before it was sold to Bill Bruce. Probably late Oct. or November of '76. Might've been a super stock meet of some sort.

Which Bennet was that?

With regard to the Best Mustang S/S All Time, who really ruled the 60's? I know there were a lot of big names that ran the factory CJ's, but who were the drivers/cars that took home the trophies?

The first winner at a Major Event.
Al Joniec in the 'Rice-Holman' SS/E Cobra-Jet.
1968 NHRA Winternationals.
Launched off the line like no other.

How about the first Mustang Super/Stocker...
In 1967, at the Winternationals.
Who ran the 1967 Mustang GT 390's in SS/E and SS/EA.

Probably Jerry Bennett, he had a 61 Dodge Pioneer wagon called Patches he and your Dad and he and Brian ran together many times at Paducah, Clarksville and Windy Hollow
