I rember watching the Coal Digger at my local track (Paducah, Ky.) when it was new. Many times it was Bennet vs Bowles, so it was always a good race.

As far as I know, Paducah was the last track the car went down before it was sold to Bill Bruce. Probably late Oct. or November of '76. Might've been a super stock meet of some sort. Which Bennet was that? With regard to the Best Mustang S/S All Time, who really ruled the 60's? I know there were a lot of big names that ran the factory CJ's, but who were the drivers/cars that took home the trophies? |

Al Joniec in the 'Rice-Holman' SS/E Cobra-Jet. 1968 NHRA Winternationals. Launched off the line like no other. How about the first Mustang Super/Stocker... In 1967, at the Winternationals. Who ran the 1967 Mustang GT 390's in SS/E and SS/EA. pc Last edited by Paul Ceasrine; 11-07-2010 at 09:20 AM. |

Hi guys Im a newbie here, I ran across this thread doing a search for the coal digger mustang. I have a good friend trhat purchased that car from Harold Stout in 1985, and it has sat in his private collection since then. I'm going to try to post some pictures of the car as it sits, he was happy to see some people remember the car. If anyone has pictures of this car in action and you would like to share or sell them Im sure he would be glad to see them. He also has Tom Schumacher's 69 Masheter Ford Mustang .If anyone has any pictures of this car in action at the track or where ever he would be glad to see them. He is getting the Masheter stang ready for another run down the quarter mile soon. Thanks alot guys I always enjoy reading about the "good old days!!!!"
These pics are of the cars as they sit right now in my friends private collection of Ford Drag race and muscle cars. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for sharing the pics. That '69 looks like a time capsule.

Let me jump in here; alot of great cars talked about in this post so let me add my list:
-Jeff Lawrence GT/AA 351 Cleveland- I think he's been 8.90's -Hartley&Saye, Roosevelt and Melvin Revels, Terrance Smith, and now Carrol Morris 71 Ford Mustang SS/I and now SS/IA -Roosevelt and Melvin Revels 83 Ford Mustang SS/F and GT/B 351 Cleveland- When they built the 83 the GT classes weren't established for sticks so it ran in SS/F I'm sure Bob Rice has photos of all of these cars. Maybe the cleanest and well built mustang is Vic and Lois Krolls. Poke your head in and around that one sometime. Mark Buchanan built some neat parts for that car.

On the IHRA side of things Donnie Moore Sr. comes to mind. He had a mustang with instant action on the door. Not sure if this was related to the picture in the earlier post but I think the car was a 68ish 428 CJ, I think SS/FA (but senility is a powerful foe)! If memory serves me well Donnie had a big 1 on the window about 2 decades ago. The car was show quality and Donnie and his wife were awesome people and always present at all IHRA events. Don Jackson
