Exclamation Pitched a rod [and a piston!]

A friend fowarded this to me and its too neat not to share.
Thes are actual photos of damage to a house caused by a exploding 183 liter, V16 diesel locomotive engine!
This one piston would make Sonny Leonard smile, each cylinder displaces 697 cubic inches!
And we thought TF anf FC explosions were violent!

Hey Tom,
My buddy, also a racer, works for GE and had to go there and document the "event". It turned out to be an improper repair procedure performed by the railroad.

See you at the races,
Wayne Kerr

Unhappy Re: Pitched a rod [and a piston!]

That's pretty interesting, considering an average 16 cylinder engine used in Diesel Locomotives only spin about 1500 RPM's max. Although there's a lot of reciprocating mass there.Wonder how far the house was from the unit that blew?

I think they may live a little close to the tracks.

Saw those images a few years back. I think it also pitched the cylinder assembly as well.
One thing for sure, no lightweight parts there.

Isn't it funny how you put a very interesting post on here and as always someone has to comment on the Drag Pack or the Mustang. Get a life guys.

BTW very interesting post. Back in the early 90's a guy who worked for my dad had a 2 cyl. tractor he competed with in a stock class at a tractor pull. We took the motor apart and replaced the stock cast iron pistons with a venolia piston. The piston was 3 pounds lighter but by the time we balanced it whole assembly and took over 20 lbs off the flywheel he won ever event he went to. If I remember right the venolia piston was over 1000 grams, but the stock piston 3600 grams.

Herb - Lighten up ......adding a little spice to a post isn't that big a deal .Just think how I'd feel everytime someone says something negative about a LS1 or an LT1and I took it to heart .Let it go - not everyone has an agenda .BTW , as you may or may not know I like those cars and believe they have a place racing with traditional cars .

PS- Also what you didn't know is that the original poster ( Mr.Goldman ) is a friend of some 39 years and just finished building a 2010 Challenger Drag Pak car for a customer in his GAS Racing shop .

Hope I've cleared a few things up ...............
