Can you imagine screwing with that thing every time you change the oil, or drain the block to pull a head? That's where I draw the line. Diapers=I'm done.

C'mon Ed - don't they have a trap door over the drain plug? Ya know... like what was on an old pair of pajamas from the 1920's?

Ang, I'm not old enough to remember the 1920s. I just look it. Do they have flaps/doors like that? I would deal with mufflers before diapers.

I had one on a 93 Camaro LT-1, Dennis (DRE) old car I bought from him.
Beautiful workmanship, had some kevlar where headers rubbed it. Absolute perfect fit, added about 5 minuteds to an oil change and was never in the way. Besides the safety benefits and protecting track from 2 hours of downtime the diaper kept engine oil heat in the motor, that part I liked. I am sure you can also fab one out of sheet alum, do it yourself if you have to with rivets and some straps to hold it on. I think they have to be 3" on sides and go from damper to rear of oil pan. Just a thought for guys with tight clearances. Jok |

A while back I had a crank break in the traps at Virgina (along with everything else in the motor). It happened very quickly and without any forwarning. Fortunately the oil went right out the bottom and I never lost control of the car. But it did scare the crap out of me. I know things like this are not only an expense but an inconvenience as well.... I'm not thrilled at all about it.... but I believe it is better to be safe than sorry. I don't think it should be a reason for anyone to quit. You don't want to let something like this ruin an otherwise good time.

BTW, this was a 10-second 1/4 mile car, not anything "required" to have one. |
