To add to Ralph's if when you are spinning and flip on ign& and it starts kicking back, stop, start spinning again, except open throttle about 1/3 of the way and then flip ign. on and usaully they will fire w/o kick back.
On starters I've had good luck w/hitachi mini starters.I think they have 3 different outputs to choose from. There is alot of China starters out there that have plastic parts that should'nt be made,I've seen some that have plastic fork that goes from soleniod to drive, how could that even work the first time? A 305 Stocker should not be eating starters or having any problem starting.
I had a brand new Jeg's starter giving me problems. I thought at first it was engagement issues and tried changing shims, still no good....The drive was N/G....it was slipping. If you lay under the car and use a remote button you can see what is actually happening when you crank it.... This is on a 509 15 -1 BB that was on gas at the time. I replaced the drive and it is working fine. I also have used nothing but red top Optimas for well over 10 years with an alternator in 3 cars....Including my LT-1 Firebird Stocker a few years ago and had no problem.
