Craig,

It really depends on what you want to do with it. In reality, all that lapping compound should be used for is sort of a final check to make sure the valve is hitting the seat all the way around and in the correct place on the valve. It should not be used to actually remove any metal or make a bad seat "good". I also use the Clover compound. I use the 400 grit and get it from MSC, mainly because they are convenient and I am usually ordering something from them at least once a month. Goodson is also very good.
