First, check the governor, valve may be stuck or gear is stripped, gear is nylon. Check modulator valve and be sure it isn't stuck.

Did it work in the burnout box, but then wouldn't shift on the pass ?

Yes I drove it back to the pits no problem it backed up fine when we went to load it. It did shift to second on the return road when I wasn't under hard exceleration.
It just stumped me cause the first pass the tranny acted perfectly. I am staring to think checkers is looking like a good sport. I will probably just park it again put in the good tranny next spring. Thanks for all the help |

I have lost 2nd gear on a turbo 400 a few times over the years. The problem is usually a broken sprag on the direct drum. If the sprag won't hold torque and slips you won't have 2nd gear. if it locks up and won't freewheel, you will smoke the direct clutch when shifting to 3rd gear. One time a piece of gasket material broke off and blocked the hole in the bolt in the center support that feeds the intermediate clutch. This also resulted in no 2nd gear.

Mike is correct, that is also a possibility. Just be sure to check the simple stuff (governor, modulator) first before you pull the unit out.
