Why don't we just make it your first national and your first two divisionals count for the national championship. That way everybody has a chance. Even division 5 & 6.

Yes, there would be. It would also stand to reason that, um, how do I say this ... there would be more "non quality" competitors also. I think your chances of running a hitter are greater in a 32 car field than in a 132 car field, wouldn't you agree? Heck, I claimed division 1 in 2000 and only went to three division 1 races that year and I finished second in the division. -Toby Last edited by Toby Lang; 01-12-2012 at 06:10 PM. |

I beleive that's the way it was in the late 60's, early 70's. World finals winners in Pomona at year end were the champions.

Yep, except it was top 5. Nobody else could run.

They could make it like the W.R. Grace Cup. There were 10 or 12 National Events then.
You could drop 2 but you had to drop them before the race was over. The year we won, we couldn't get to Pomona, so that was one (dropped). We went to Denver and lost in the 3rd round. We dropped that race, meaning all the rest we had to take. We figured the rest of the races were at tracks we were comfortable at, E'town, Sanair, Indy, Seattle, and Ontario. You had to dial in at 8 am for the whole day. Well we blew it when my partner ran a car that couln't run the index in the first round. We got there second and still broke out. We had to take the race. Our hopes of a Grace Cup win were pretty much over. We then were just trying to finish somewhere in the money. It's funny how things don't always work as planned.

I went out in the second round of two of them. And since you have to claim at least three in division races I had to count two 40 pointers towards my total. I couldn't replace them. In my other division 1 race I was runner-up to none other than mild-mannered Class Racer reporter Jack Matyas. I also beat Tex Miller heads-up at that race. ![]() My other two counters were at the division 3 track in Joliet where I went out 5th round and the division 2 track in Bristol where I won. -Toby Last edited by Toby Lang; 01-12-2012 at 06:32 PM. |

It was that way all through the 70's Till at least 1980. Only the top 5 from each division.
And a 32 car field. They never had a full field so everyone there qualified. (thank God nhra didn't realize that in 1980) In 79 I believe we would have won either way Ontario was our 3rd national win and I believe we won 2 points meets.

The first World Finals at Pomona was 1984. That eliminates Pomona from the early 60's and 70's.
