I sold the car to a guy who lived outside of Myrtle Point, Oregon. He painted the car and installed a 440. He raced it at Woodburn occasionally, but most of his action was at an 1/8 mile track on the southern Oregon coast. I saw the car sitting on a trailer in front of his business about 4 years after he bought it. He told me that business was good and racing had to take a back seat. I have no idea what happened to the engine or the car.

The "Pates" wagon was also ran as a D/SA with a 394HP, (inline dual quad, solid lifter, Police Option) 413" engine. I had the pivilege of driving it then. The owner of the tape shop wanted it ran at Irwindale (original) Drag Strip to advertise his business. His name was Rich and had me play a tape which turned on the light bars in the rear windows, real seventies. On 7" tires it could be a handful. It won class at the Hot Rod Magazine Meet at Riverside one year against Gordon Williams blown Studebaker. My memory tells me we went 11.98 at Irwindale one night in bracket form. It had 9" drum brakes and scared me at least twice in shutdown. I still have fond memories of a hauling wagon.

This thread is a good one and thought I'd bring it back. I have a nice 62 Belvedere Post car that I'm gonna build into a drag car. At first I was just gonna go with a 440 and then considered a 413 Max Wedge clone but am now considering a 343horse 383 beings I have a 383, 915 heads which were allowed later on as replacements and most of all I have the 1827899 intake. This car will be bracket raced mostly but I'd like to see what I could get out of it building it to late 60s early 70s rules.
Were they allowing the "cheater cams" at that point? Any input you guys can offer is appreciated.

The 62 Dodge wagon aptly named "White Trash" was owned and raced by Willard Wright from Monrovia, California....was a stock eliminator car up through the 1971 season......the attempt to covert it to a super/stocker was not a huge success....In 1972, the Smothers brothers,recognizing Willards driving prowess and crowd magnetism, gave him one of their 5 Oldsmobiles........I purchased the Edelbrock STR-14 intake and carbs from that Dodge......The manifold was the prototype for future units....ran it on my car for many years....now to answer straightaxle65`s question...YES, cheater cams were allowed in the late 60`s and early 70`s....in fact they have always been allowed because tech had no real way to check them...They could measure lift, duration and overlap, but could not determine the "rate of lift"........my first recollection of these cams were a very few"special" 097 Duntov cams that Jere Stahl had for 1957 Chevies......Also the 67 915 came both ways with 2 different exhaust valve sizes..The larger one is legal.......By the time the combustion chamber is milled to 66.5 cc`s, the compression ratio will be near 11 to 1.....
