It used to be the lowest HP/weight SS break was "A" for sticks and "AA" for automatics (second "A" denoting automatic). They added lower HP/weight break classes to accommodate the new, faster cars like the supercharged Mustangs. The did that by adding more "A"s. So for a stick, they added a class SS/AA. But that designation was already used for "A" break automatics, so they changed the old SS/AA to SSA/A (super stock A, automatic). So SS/AA is a stick at break "AA", SS/AAA is an automatic at break "AA" and SSA/A is an automatic at break "A". SS/A was left alone and is still a stick at break "A". Clear as mud, huh?
