msd coils: HVH vs Pro Power pros and cons?? better one?

Which coil is best and why? Double the price for the HVH. Why? I have used the pro power for years. Pros and cons to either?

We run HVC on all our cars. Seem to last better and perform better.
Had to take two degrees timing out compared to Pro Coil. No clue why
but did.

When do we find out you new car combo? ..... Inquiring minds want to
know.

Pat, I am using a 7al-2 with a 8201 coil, but I also have a 8261 coil. Would I be better off using the 8261 coil? I have two of the 7al-2's and both of them are probably 10 years old. Are there any performance gains if I had you do any upgrades to these boxes? I cant say that I feel like anything is wrong with the box I'm running, and the other one wasn't having any problems last time I used it.

Would this also be the case with a 6-series ignition (#6421) and the HVC-2 coil (#8253)? The output information on the MSD website suggest this is an acceptable combination.

I guess what I was asking was, Rather than the combo of MSD components...
Would you see a difference for a specific engine combo due to combustion chamber style shape etc.
Or will you automatically need to lower your timing 2 deg. with this coil
Here is my situation.
I did not dyno with my MSD setup THAT IS IN MY CAR.
THE MSD ON THE DYNO USED A 7AL2 AND A PRO POWER COIL.
I have the 6AL and the 8252 coil in my car.

Short answer combo does not matter. If you hook up the box & coil on the bench with an oscilliscope. Then vary the sparkplug gap from narrow to very large you would find that the MSD 8251 coil is very fast reacting coil when compared to the MSD 8201 coil. We repeated this same kind of testing over the past couple of years during dyno testing. The results were the same the MSD 8251 coil was a better match to the 7 series boxes. Yes, the MSD 8253 is a good match up to the MSD 6421. Many of our customers use that combo in their racing program with good results.

Ok, now we are on the same page! Let me start with, as a common practice when using Dyno time to dial things in. Consider bringing and using your ignition setup to tweak things in. The two setups you mentioned should provide different results if your there to tweak the engine in. If your there to just see what numbers the engine can pull then just run what they have hooked to the dyno. As for moving the timing, each engine has its own personality and will have its own sweet spot. Most of our customers find that they only need to move one degree of timing when tweaking things in.
