Default Ford Ranger tranny swap??

This is not related to a race car, but is being posted as a favor to a friend who is a well-known racer, Bobby Roper.

His daughter has a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup (2.5-liter) which has an automatic transmission that recently bit the dust.

A replacement has been located, locally, but is a year earlier (1997.)

Bobby is apprehensive that the computer hookup or software might not be compatable between the two years.

Does anyone have any information about that?

Thanks for any info!!!

A check on carpart.com reveals only 1998 Rangers listed for that trans. Check on 1997 indicates a 2.3 liter engine - not being a Ford expert but I would sure get an interchange info from a parts yard to verify before buying/installing.
