James, everyone on here that posts any photos saved from their computer will end up as a thumbnail on the forums...then only when it is posted can you double click the image and it will enlarge, now right click & paste...the other way is to have your own photobucket account and just hot link off them from there.

Would have expected this old thread to be quite long. But it wasn't.
So, I better add a few Pontiac SS pics. IIRC, SS was not made a separate class 'til '67. So, I'll begin with '67 models. Will start with 4 '67 Bird pics. The 1st one was a nat record holder. Of course the 2nd one belonged to Gay Pontiac, & was driven by Roy Gay. Notice the Vitar decal on the Myrtle Motors Bird. My 1st racing converter was a Vitar brand, at the recommendation of H-O Racing Specialties. It worked great. My girlfriend won her 1st 6 races of the '75 season, plus the Louisiana State Championship race, held at the Monroe track, in our E/SA '68 Bird. The 4th Bird belongs to Joel Larkin. Don't know if it was racing long enuff ago to be called a Super Stocker from the past, or not, since it's a "big tire" car. Oh well. A DRC search shows the car racing in 2003. So, that's almost 20 years ago. That's old enuff to be the "past", for me. Pic #5 is a SS/IA '67 Goat. #6 is a GT/FA '67 Goat. For #7, how 'bout a little variety ? Anybody ever see a SS/H '65 GTO ragtop ? It's certainly the only one I ever saw. #8 is a SS/I '66 Goat, the "Bailiff". I'll finish this batch of pics out with one of my Pontiac heroes, Jack Mullins. He wasn't driving his old wagon in '67. But he was in '75, when he won the US Nats ! Was a record holder & multi nat event winner. Last edited by oldskool; 10-04-2021 at 09:09 PM. |

I'll begin the this post with the SS/FA '68 "Yellow Bird".
#2 is the John Angeles & Pete McCarthy SS/IA '68 Bird. The most famous '68 SS Bird may be the Roy & Mike McKinney Bird. Have pics of it in blue & red. I assume it was the same car, with different paint. But I'm not sure. In red, it got some BIG air ! Too much, sometime. Needed wheelie bars. Pic #6 is of a Comp Cams ad, with the McKinney Bird in it. #7 - Just remembered an old wagon which held a nat record for more than a dozen years, IF the pics indicate fact. I can't verify all the record years. Whole car may be bogus. Don't know what class/classes it ran, or who owned it. Maybe somebody here knows the car & can provide more info ? Will began this post with 3 '69 SS Birds.
#1 is a small tire SS/F stick Bird. #2 is Phil Monteith's RAIV '69 "Hatari" Bird @ Indy. #3 is the John Angeles Bird, with daughter Keri driving. In 2000, she drove it into the 9's. it's been said that was the 1st 9 sec pass by a 400 Pontiac powered reg SS class car. #4 is SS/G "Chief Justice", which is a small tire Super Stocker. #5 is Art Peterson's '69 Goat. I have later pics of it, in 2 different colors. Don't know when he 1st raced it. #6 is the "Packin Poncho". Apparently, Royce Fowler never ran it in NHRA. All the pics I've seen show it with a hood scoop. We saw it at the World Nats, in Amarillo, in either '75 or '76. It had a snorkle scoop. Have seen other pics showing it with a much wider scoop.
