What's the correct way to adjust shift linkage on a top loader. The trans seems a little hard to go into 2nd gear. This is a street car whit a 289. Thanks Robbie

Pin the shifter in neutral, then adjust the shift rods so the individual levers are in their neutral postion also.

That's what I did, I'll go through it again and I'll also put new bushings in. Thanks Mark

Usaully linkage adjustment effects you 2-3 or going through neutral,I'm guessing it's H pattern, try shifting really slow to 2nd, if shifts easier may be sycronizer starting to wear,if it's just a little wore may not grind yet, usaully a bad syncro will let slider and dogs scrape together on shift making scrape or gear grinding sound,be sure clutch is releasing good also that could cause but would most likely effect all shifts, also make sure linkage is not rubbing anything, also make sure shifter just don't need a litttle oiling up

Thanks Mike, the shift is a little hard going in to 2nd. I'll go through the adjustment and lube up the shifter and see if that helps. How hard are these things to rebuild? Robbie

Not too hard to rebuild at all Robbie, the rear output bearing can be stubborn at times, other than that pay close attention to the direction and location of the 1-2 and 3-4 syncro hubs and sliders.I'm sure there are many parts suppliers for the toploader, but I used David Kee transmissions the last time I rebuilt mine.
