I own a 71 comet gt 302 2bbl auto why is hp factor different from 72 cannot see the diff in the specs am i missing something?

1972 was the year the factories changed the way hp was figured. on the up side 71 and 72 comet are the same visually.

does this mean i could run the car as a 72 with the 71 block and heads or would i need a 72 engine ?

Just check the engine specs on www.nhraracer.com. It will tell you what heads, carb, and intake, as well as piston and cam specs.

rule book states that you have to run the same year block or use an "approved' block. kinda depends on how close you follow the rules.
