Whenever we 'get' to buy something else, someone always says, "Look, it's the cost of racing. There's so many other things to complain about. It's only $'xxx' more. If you can't afford it, maybe you should just quit racing."

While it's obviously a typo, it does illustrate the point that a little bit here and a little bit there becomes a mountain over time. Boiling frog syndrome.
