The front fender of the large version of the first photo reads "265 c.i." That may not be what's under the hood, though.
EDIT: The current record for GT/L is listed as "minimum", so the Record Holder paint on Gary's car is dated. Motor is probably as noted above by Jim. Dale

Gary did run a 265 combo with a 3 speed manual, that was back when the 4 speed upgrade wasn't legal. I think maybe part of his reason for switching to the 283 was so that he could run the 4 speed. Obviously, now it would be legal to run the 265 with a 4 speed. If you have ever heard one of these cars run back in the 3 speed days, the RPM drop really bogged down the motor so I've got to believe the 4 speed change was a big help. Mike Parmenter from Oregon does run a '55 with a 265 and 4 speed in SS/P and currently holds the record.
